The clock

At the corner of Place du Cros and Rue des Templiers, a staircase leads up to a little-known monument at the heart of Grimaud village life: the clock tower.

A clock at the heart of the village

Square in plan, this white campanile with its elaborate bell tower stands at the rear of the Placette, in the heart of the old village.

Built in the 17th century, its clock was used to mark the working hours and daily lives of the villagers.

The clockmaker who created the mechanism, Paul Odobey, also made the clock in Gourdon, a village in the Alpes-Maritimes.

Viewpoints

This clock can be admired from several viewpoints in the village.

Rue du Baou, la Placette and rue des Templiers are just some of the places from which you can see the clock tower.

All you have to do is wait for it to chime!

The clock is still in working order and rings on the hour for local residents.

A communal clock

Unlike the church bells, which came under the ecclesiastical authority, the clock came under the communal executive.

To carry out this task, a ‘clock conductor’ was commissioned by the community to ensure that it ran smoothly and to regularly wind its mechanism.
