Dance: Folia

Cultural, Dance in Sainte-Maxime

From :  15 Full-fare
  • More than ever open to the world and to the plurality of choreographic languages, Mourad Merzouki orchestrates, between hip hop and baroque repertoire, a mixed show full of creativity.

On stage, the musicians interact with the dancers and offer us a moment out of time. In strength and number, they operate from an unusual fusion of genres placed under the sign of sharing and generosity.

Always ready to reinvent his choreographic language, the Director of the C.C.N. de Créteil is in perpetual search for multidisciplinary intersections with inventive aesthetics. Advocating cultural hybrids, Mourad Merzouki likes to break the codes to always better dialogue and open new horizons.

Through his creations, he never stopped going to meet what was foreign to him, from digital arts to classical music. So why not mix hip hop and tarentelles, these traditional dances and music from the South of Italy? From the meeting between Mourad Merzouki and Franck-Emmanuel Comte, leader of the Concert of the Hostel Dieu, was born Folia.

Through a scenography of a dazzling beauty playing on transparency and the use of chiaroscuro, six musicians seize the vocabulary of baroque music by confronting it with the reinvented and learned hip hop of Mourad Merzouki. Violins, cello, double bass, harpsichord, guitar, theorbo and synthesizer print a feverish rhythm to which the vibrato of the moving bodies responds. While the voice of the soprano Heather Newhouse rises, the ten dancers give us a large-format show, joyful and extraordinary: a force of life, an appeal to joy sublimated by powerful waves of poetry.
