The Chœur l'Esterelenco, the Saint Raphaël Fréjus choral association and the Ensemble Choral de Lorgues (ECL) are giving three concerts of Carl ORFF's "CARMINA BURANA", including the one on 2 July at the Château de Grimaud.

In 1803, a manuscript containing some 350 poems was discovered, probably written by itinerant religious clerics. These texts are about spring, love, games and wine.
In 1934, the composer Carl Orff (1895-1982) found an edition in a bookshop and decided to set a selection of these poems to music.
Fascinated by Stravinsky, by early music and by popular musical traditions, Orff, who was also a great teacher, was very interested in the virtues of dance,

His score is a blend of these different influences: at once modern and archaic, classical and timeless, with a strong rhythmic character and melodic motifs that are simple in appearance but can be sophisticated.

The original orchestration gives pride of place to percussion.
Over the years, this cantata has acquired a universal popularity that has never waned, no doubt thanks to the contrasts between highly dynamic passages and moments of pure poetry where time seems suspended. Carmina Burana never goes out of fashion.
You will have the opportunity to see a version with two grand pianos, six percussionists, two soloists, one hundred and twenty choristers and conductor Pascal PONS.
